Issyk Kul Lake itself is a major attraction, known for being one of the largest alpine lakes in the world. Its crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain backdrop make it perfect for swimming, boating, and relaxing on the beach. You'll see tons of locals escape the heat in the capital city, Bishkek, and spend their summers in Issyk Kul, and even tourists from neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

WHY VISIT LAKE ISSYK KUL IN KYRGYZSTAN
Lake Issyk-Kul holds geographical significance as one of the largest and deepest alpine lakes in the world. It spans approximately 6,236 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 668 meters. Its sheer size and depth make it a unique natural wonder, often referred to as the 'Pearl of Central Asia.'
The lake's name, Issyk-Kul, translates to 'Warm Lake' in the Kyrgyz language, reflecting its remarkable thermal properties. Despite being surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the lake never freezes, even in the harshest winters. This is due to its high salinity and geothermal activity, which contribute to its relatively warm temperatures year-round.
5 THINGS TO DO IN LAKE ISSYK KUL, KYRGYZSTAN
1. Burana Tower
One of the must-see stops along the way from Bishkek to Issyk Kul is the Burana Tower. Located near the town of Tokmok, approximately 80 kilometers east of Bishkek, this ancient minaret dates back to the 9th century and offers a glimpse into the region's rich history. The site also includes a small museum and a collection of ancient petroglyphs. The Burana Tower is intricately linked to the Silk Road and served as a hub for commerce and an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West.
The tower stands at about 25 meters tall today, although it was originally believed to be around 45 meters before an earthquake damaged it. Visitors can climb the internal spiral staircase to the top of the tower.
2. The Rukh Ordo Cultural Center
The Ruh Ordo Cultural Center is a center established by Kyrgyz businessman and philanthropist Tashkul Kereksizov. It's a cultural and spiritual complex that offers a unique blend of various religious and cultural monuments. It has an open-air museum, which showcases sculptures, art installations, and exhibits to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan and other nations.
The center also hosts various cultural events, performances, and festivals. You'll be able to see stunning views of Issyk Kul Lake and the surrounding mountains. When I visited in August 2023, the admission fee was 400 Kyrgyz soms.
3. Local Cuisine
There's one thing that you must eat during your drive to Issyk Kul, and that is a dish called kattama. It is a fried layered flatbread. When I had it for the first time, it reminded me of a Chinese spring onion pancake and puff pastry, minus the extreme puff. It is thin and buttery, with different fillings such as onions, spring onions, potatoes, and more. It's often paired with a hot cup of milk tea.
There is a street lined with kattama cafes so I recommend you stop here to enjoy a nice treat before you continue your drive to Issyk Kul.
During your drive to Issyk Kul, you'll see tons of vendors selling various items such as salted fish, and fruits such as watermelon, apples, and kurut. I recommend purchasing these and enjoying them as a snack.

4. Barskoon Waterfall
Barskoon Waterfall, also known as Barskoon Gorge Waterfall, is one of the most stunning natural attractions in the Issyk Kul region of Kyrgyzstan. Located within the Barskoon Gorge, the waterfall is a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking to experience the beauty of Kyrgyzstan's mountainous landscapes.
The Barskoon Gorge is situated on the southern shore of Lake Issyk Kul, approximately 90 kilometers from the town of Karakol. The gorge is accessible via a well-maintained road that branches off from the main highway connecting Bishkek to Karakol. This makes it relatively easy to visit as part of a day trip or a longer excursion.
Visitors to Barskoon Waterfall can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, picnicking, and photography. The trails leading to the waterfall are well-marked and offer different levels of difficulty, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels. The scenic beauty of the gorge, combined with the sound of cascading water, creates a serene and picturesque environment.
5. Hot Springs
Issyk Kul is not only famous for its breathtaking scenery but also for its therapeutic hot springs. These natural hot springs are scattered around the lake and offer a unique way to relax and rejuvenate amidst nature.
One of the most popular hot springs near Issyk Kul is the Altyn Arashan Hot Springs. Located in the picturesque Altyn Arashan Valley, these springs are accessible via a challenging but rewarding trek from the town of Karakol. The hot springs here are known for their mineral-rich waters, which are believed to have healing properties.
For those seeking a more luxurious experience, the Ak-Suu Kench Hot Springs offer modern facilities while still retaining the natural charm of the area. Located near the village of Ak-Suu, these springs are equipped with private pools and changing rooms, providing a comfortable and private setting for visitors.

Nature enthusiasts can enjoy a visit to the nearby Grigorievka and Semenovka Gorges. These scenic gorges offer stunning landscapes, hiking trails, and opportunities for picnicking and horseback riding.
