One Day in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Itinerary

Updated: Jun 22

Welcome to Bishkek, the vibrant capital city of Kyrgyzstan! The city offers a unique blend of Soviet-era architecture and Central Asian culture, making it a fascinating destination for your one-day adventure. With only a day in Bishkek, there's no time to waste. So, continue reading to sample the best of what Bishkek has to offer.

ONE DAY IN BISHKEK | ITINERARY

Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just love to wander through bustling bazaars, there's something here for everyone. Let's dive into your perfect day in Bishkek. I've spent 1.5 years living in Bishkek and ideally, I recommend spending at least four days in the capital city and two days in Issyk Kul, a four to five drive from Bishkek.

However, since we are limited to one day, I'll guide you through the must-see sights.

1. Ala-Too Square

ala too square

Start your morning at Ala-Too Square, the heart of Bishkek. The square is where you can see the country's culture and history come together. The guards at Ala-Too Square change every hour, starting from 7:00 AM and continuing until 6:00 PM (this schedule may change depending on the season). It's quite a well-choreographed event, showcasing the guards' precision and typically lasts a few minutes.

2. Visit the State History Museum

Located right across Ala-Too Square, is the State History Museum and offers an in-depth look into Kyrgyzstan's rich cultural heritage. You can spend a few hours here and the museum's exhibits span various periods from ancient times to the modern era. Visitors can explore artifacts from the Bronze Age, including tools, pottery, and jewelry. It also features exhibits on the nomadic lifestyle of the Kyrgyz people, showcasing traditional yurts, clothing, and everyday items.

Ticket prices range from 110 to 550 Kyrgyz soms. Approximately 90% of the signage and exhibits have English translations. For the latest information, here is their website: https://historymuseum.kg/. As of this post's publish date, they are closed on Mondays.

3. Visit Osh Bazaar

I hope you're starving by now because let's head to Bishkek's largest market, Osh Bazaar. Here, you can find everything from fresh produce, spices to traditional Kyrgyz clothing, crafts and souvenirs to take back home. It can be an overwhelming experience due to its size and the sheer number of vendors, but I suggest going in the early mornings or late afternoons when it's less crowded.

I love going to the bazaar because it's interesting to see what seasonal produce is available and if you're visiting in the summer, I highly recommend purchasing locally grown watermelon and strawberries. I assure you that the watermelon you eat in Kyrgyzstan will be juicy, sweet, and extremely affordable.

Osh Bazaar is on the outskirts of Bishkek so if you are to visit a bazaar that is more in the center, I recommend visiting Orto Sai Bazaar. It's bustling with stalls and friendly vendors, and I enjoy going here because it's closer to my home but also much cleaner than Osh Bazaar.

4. Enjoy Traditional Kyrgyz Dishes at Navat or Supara Restaurant

You can't leave Kyrgyzstan without having traditional dishes. Here are the top restaurants in Bishkek I recommend you to eat at Best Restaurants in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

There are some traditional Kyrgyz dishes:

  • Beshbarmak: Features tender boiled meat, typically horse, lamb or beef, served on a bed of flat noodles and accompanied by a rich broth.

  • Manti: Manti is a Kyrgyz version of a dumpling. These dumplings are usually steamed (I have seen them fried but that was rare) and are usually filled with a savory mixture of minced lamb or beef, onions, pumpkin, and spices.

  • Lagman: It consists of hand-pulled noodles tossed with a medley of stir-fried vegetables, meat (commonly beef or lamb), and aromatic spices. It can either be in a soup or served dry. The combination of the chewy noodles, tender meat, and crisp vegetables makes the dish addicting.

  • Plov: It is a hearty one-pot meal made with fragrant rice, chunks of tender meat (usually lamb or beef), carrots, onions, and a blend of spices. This is my favorite Kyrgyz dish.

5. Go Horse Backriding at Supara Chunkurchak

Adding to the point above, if you're looking to eat traditional Kyrgyz dishes and do something more adventurous, I recommend visiting the Supara Chunkurchak resort. There is a second location of the Supara restaurant and you can go horseback riding to experience the stunning natural beauty. It's a relatively short drive from the capital city, and you'll be able to see traditional Kyrgyz yurts. The horseback riding experience is suitable for all skill levels and professional guides will be there to take you on a specific route.

The Kyrgyz people have a long tradition of nomadic herding and horses have been an essential part of their way of life for centuries, so this is an activity I recommend you add to your itinerary.

6. Watch the sunset from a rooftop restaurant

one day in bishkek, kyrgyzstan

The day is coming to an end and to wrap it up, I recommend visiting a rooftop restaurant to get an unforgettable sunset experience. My favorite is Iwa Restaurant & Bar, located inside the Sheraton Hotel. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the city, and listen to live music, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the evening.
