The 5 Best Japanese Restaurants in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Updated: Jun 22

japanese food in bishkek, kyrgyzstan

If you're a fan of Japanese cuisine like I am, you're in luck because there are great Japanese restaurants in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan where you can indulge in ramen, sushi, and other Japanese delicacies.

I do want to note that Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country so getting access to quality, fresh fish is difficult and expensive. Do not eat raw fish expecting it to be fresh, it will most likely be frozen. I also want to mention that Kyrgyzstan seems to "localize" Japanese food. Specifically sushi and rolls, they are always filled with cream cheese.

If you'd like to explore other great eats in Bishkek, check out my other blog posts:

JAPANESE COMMUNITY IN KYRGYZSTAN

What surprised me about living in Kyrgyzstan was the presence of a Japanese community. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Japan extended its diplomatic and economic relationships to the newly independent Central Asian countries, including Kyrgyzstan. Educational and cultural exchange programs have also played a significant role in fostering a Japanese community in Bishkek.

Various Japanese organizations and institutions have established programs to promote cultural understanding and educational exchange. This has resulted in a steady flow of Japanese students and ambassadors to the region. But vice-versa, many Kyrgyz people also go to Japan to study and learn the language.

5 BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANTS IN BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN

1. Furusato

Address: 132 Bokonbayev St, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Furusato has a spot in my heart and when you visit, you'll know what I mean when I say it's like going to a restaurant hidden in an alleyway in Japan. If you are craving Japanese cuisine, this is the restaurant to go to. They serve traditional dishes such as sushi, sashimi, ramen, and izakaya dishes. Considering they are one of the most reviewed restaurants on Google Maps, you'll frequently see foreigners and the staff speaks English very well. The customer service is impeccable and I had a chance to speak to the owner, and he comes from Japan.

It is perfect for a date night because of the cozy, inviting atmosphere and reminiscent of a traditional Japanese eatery. Make sure you make reservations because it can get busy during the evenings.

2. ZEN

Address: 80 Yunusaliev Ave, Bishkek 720005, Kyrgyzstan

I've mentioned before how much I love Japanese food and I had the most amazing experience at Zen. The restaurant is located inside the Ololo co-working space building, and the interior is extremely modern with an Asian touch. The sushi and sashimi tasted incredibly fresh, and the rolls were extremely well made. The menu isn't as large as Furusatos but the food portions are big and very delicious.

3. Sushi Room

Address: 30 Erkindik Ave, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Sushi Room offers a local take on Japanese dining with a sleek and contemporary interior. The restaurant is famous for its extensive sushi menu, including unique rolls and classic favorites. In addition to sushi, Sushi Room also serves delicious ramen, and other Asian dishes such as stir-fries. The stylish ambiance and creative menu make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
